Hi all. I have an old laptop. its a 486 dx2 50 with a 500mb HD. I just installed Slack 3.9 via floppies. After I'm all done installing the a set (a1-a14) I can boot the computer, but first:

a. lilo doesnt work right. It wont take any keystrokes, and eventually loads the partition due to timeout.

b. the cat command is missing, thus startup is hurt badly

c. where it normally says

darkstar login:

it says:

(none) login:

so, are there any packages I can install, or I should install? I installed ONLY the a series, and i thought that was the only thing that was needed, and included the cat command.

Any help will be appreciated. Thanks!

defiant

edit: the HOSTNAME file in /etc is present, and it says darkstar.example.net

perhaps because there is no "cat" it is not displaying it correctly?

thanks

That would be my guess. Are you sure you installed the entire A series? Also, do you have network access with it? If so, you may be able to do a NFS or FTP install, and then ftp whatever other packages you want/need.

I have a 486-33sx lappie with 4mb ram and a 200mb drive running Slack 7.1 - the A,N, and AP package sets all fit fine and leave me almost half the drive free. Also, they add a lot of funcionality. ssh, etc. are all added as well, via packages from linuxmafia.org.

No, as of right now I do not have any connection to the internet via this laptop. I do however have an old Xircom serial to ethernet port thingy, does anyone know if that is supported in linux?

I do know that I installed the entire A series, with the exception of minicom.tgz and bsdlpr.tgz (i dont need to print, nor do i need modem stuff)

does anyone know where the cat program resides? (which package).. i would REALLY like to have that as it would solve all of my problems. thanks!

It is either in the textutils package or maybe linuxutils. It should be listed somewhere in one of the text files on the cd/ftp site.

i was looking through and I did find that, now I am just wondering why it didnt install as txtutils.tgz is located in a14 and I distinctly remember installing it. Normally the other packages are alphabetically ordered, I am wondering why this one was last. Perhaps it had to be reworked due to this problem? Ill try to install it again tonight, and we'll see where that goes. Thanks, ph34r.
