The simple things are often overlooked in the help guides - it is assumed that the user knows quite a bit, even newbies.

Are there any sites that have an alphebetical list of commonly used commands and what they do?

For example:

command what it does

DATE RETURNS DATE
CD CHANGE DIRECTORY

and so on... This way if you didn't know the exact command, you could scan the command definitions and find the command you need.

If you really wanna get into it, then I would recommend to buy "Linux in a Nutshell", from O'Reilly (www.oreilly.com). There, all the commands are listed with all their flags and what they do.
