I don't know if you guys remember, but a wee while ago, you tried to help me out with a IP MASQ problem I was having.

I'd just like to say thanks very much for all your help, it was good of you to take so much time out to try and solve my problem.

I never did get it resolved, but I got hold of a new PC a week ago, and by the time I had swapped stuff around, and re-allocated the machines around the house, I ended up using a PIII 933 Mhz PC as my gateway/router PC. I installed Firestarter as my firewall, and it all works fine now, none of the previous problems have resurfaced (despite using one of the Realtek 8029 NIC's in the gateway box).

So, I just wanted to say to you guys, thanks for your help, it was much appreciated at the time.

I'm using a PIV 1.5 Ghz, the kids have my old Athlon 1 Ghz, so their old PIII 933 is spare. I've set it up as a dual boot machine, Red Hat 7.3 & Windows 2000 Advanced Server, 'cos I'm going to try and study for my MCSA (yeah, I know, but most employers now won't touch you without MS certification, and I gotta eat.)

It runs Red Hat beautifully tho.

Presumably the servers are left on 24/7? If so, what kind of % increase was your electricity bill when you started running them? I'm just interested as I've been running both my webserver and firewall 24/7 for coming up to 3 months and just wondering what the quarterly bill is gonna look like!

Yes, all that I listed as on run 24/7. They are all on UPS's.

I have increased the number of machines gradually over the years so I really don't know what affect thay all have on my electric bill. I'm sure it's quite a bit.
I use several KVM switches so I only use 5 monitors. All but one of them goes in to sleep mode when I'm not using it. Some I turn off if I think of it.
The PIII 733Mhz is in the kitchen and has an ATI Radeon AIW in it for TV. It has a Thomas Kincade screen saver on it my wife likes so it's on all the time. I'm sure it adds a lot to the bill.
If you add in the 2 fans I run constantly, 3 Ethernet switches, an ISDN modem, an Intel Print Server, a LaserJet 2200 and an HP 890C, I'm sure the cost is pretty high.

Someday maybe I'll shut it all down for a month and see what it does to the bill(NOT!).

My wife makes snide comments once in a while on what it all does to the electric bill. But if the network goes down and she can't get to the Internet, damn the cost, just get it running again!
