now i know that linux cannot be entirely crash proof, unless it is set up _perfectly_... and my linux isn't there yet... but, every now and then, when i'm in X, my linux will just dissapear, and return me to the log-in screen. is there a general cause for this, or will i have to check somestuff out and post more information here?

I've seen this a couple of times, thank goodness, not on my 'puter (yet). Both times it turned out to be memory. We fixed one by just reseating the sticks, the other one had to replace both sticks with new ones. Both these machines performed flawlessly in "Doze, but gave this symptom in Linux. The issue ONLY appeared when a higher addressed memory was in use, they would run forever in console, but as soon as memory addresses went up high, bingo, fault time. Totally random, too, might work for hours, or days, then BANG!, crash time. Certainly, this may not be your issue, just sharing some hard won experience as a thought. Ray
