I've been trying to switch active applications in gnome with the keyboard but it's giving me fits. I hit alt tab and it does change which window is active but it doesn't display it on top. Is this even the right key combination? What can I do about this? I'm getting tired of using the mouse and having to minimize windows to see my bar.

Somwhere in gnome-config there is a focus-behavior where youll have to set "raise focused window".

I found what you're talking about. There was one selection for the mouse and one for the keyboard. Selecting the keyboard one did exactly what I wanted. Now I'll rarely have to reach up for the mouse. Merci.
