I would like to download Debian. I go to their website. I go to Dist/main/disks-i386. I just don't know how much of that I need. I see the base .gz. Do I need the rest?
And if I burn what I download to a CD, is there an order to this? When I put the CD in the CDROM, will the install begin? Text or GUI?
Any help would be appreciated. I have two PCs, one with Mandrake7.0/Win98 (CDROM, but no CD-R). The other has WindowsME (my wife's) and it does have a CD-R. I was thinking I could download everything to my wife's pc and burn the install to her CD-R and then sneaker-net the CD to my Linux box and install Debian in addition to win/98 and Drake7.0. I have about 2g to give Debian.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,

Go here for Debian iso: http://www.linuxiso.org/debian.html

Download and burn the iso on your wifey's machine. Put the newly burned cd in your linux box and off you go.

If you are only planning on doing an ftp install, you will need five disks. The base system, the root filesystem, and three driver disks (for kernel compilation). This also insures that you get the most up to date installation without having to apt-get upgrade everything once you're installed. Best regards,

OR (flame at will) you can go to www.stormix.com (http://www.stormix.com) and do an ftp install of storm linux 2000 hail (potato). All you need is 2 floppies, one with the kernel and one with the drivers for the ftp download.

I got a copy of Storm Linux "Rain", on the cover of Linux format magazine. It is supposed to be Debian based. Have you heard anything about this? I am thinking about installing it in addition to the win98 and Drake7.0 that's already there.
I guess I could wipe Drake 7.0, then repartition, with partitions for /home /usr /boot and such. Then do I need two more partitions, one for Drake 7.0 and one for Storm Linux created before I install? Any help with this would be greatly appreciated. Also someone on LinuxHelp on xchat told me that Storm Linux destroyed their Windows partition. Ever heard of that or how I can avoid it?
Thanks,

I've used Storm for a long time. I started with "Rain" but "Hail" is the latest release (based on the most recent stable release of Debian, "Potato").
It did not destroy my windows partition. http://www.linuxnewbie.org/ubb/smile.gif
Anywho, if you want to download and burn an iso of pure Debian, go to http://cdimage.debian.org . It will ask you a couple of questions and usually guide you to a list of debian mirrors so you can choose one closest to you. I wouldn't go with linuxiso as they are often overloaded.
Storm "Hail" has a partitioner included in the install like many distros do nowadays.
What woorked best for me, though (when I had a version of drake on my machine) was rerun the drake install, use their DiskDrake partition program (during the install) and repartitioned my whole drive (not touching that windows partition, of course http://www.linuxnewbie.org/ubb/wink.gif ). I made the partitions for both Mandrake and Storm. You can mount only those partitions you want to use for Mandrake and still have it format the other ones so you can install Storm later.
Then I installed Storm without any problems.
Actually, I use the Mandrake installer, now, only when I want to repartition my hard drive. Haven't used the actual distro in ages. Much cheaper than going out and buying Partition Magic (which can cause some issues anyway) and safer (les intimidating) than fdisk (although fips works pretty well, too.)
So there you go.
Any more questions, just ask away!

Jeff, I think you left out the rescue.bin file. To clarify, you'll need base2_2.tgz and from images-1.44/ you'll need rescue, root, and drivers (I see 4 driver files now... weird, there used to be 3)

This README (ftp://ftp.debian.org/debian/dists/potato/main/disks-i386/2.2.20.0.1-2000-12-03/README.txt) should get you started.

If you wanna get freaky, give Debian-reiser (http://www.psouth.net/~jjk/projects/reiser-debian/) a try (not for noobs). http://www.linuxnewbie.org/ubb/biggrin.gif
