Hello everyone, I would like to know what's a good Mp3 player for Slackware 7.1? I downloaded Kmp3 last night and it seems to be working, but when I go to play a Mp3 song it just hangs. I then have to kill the X server because it locks up my computer. I am wondering if anyone else has had the same problem with Kmp3?

mpg123 - console player, very good.
freeamp (http://www.freeamp.org) - for X, not so good http://www.linuxnewbie.org/ubb/wink.gif
XMMS (http://www.xmms.org) - for X, my favorite.
amp - also for the console.

mpg123 and amp comes with Slackware.

Well I just got XMMS and installed it with installpkg, and every time I go to play a Mp3 song it will just crash my computer. I even had to power down my system because it wouldn't even let me kill the X Server. What's wrong with all of theses Mp3 player for Linux? Am I doing something wrong, or what?

Odd, never had a problem with it (tho there was that midi plugin incident).

Did you try different versions or maybe different tarballs.

No I have not tried another version yet. I can play CDs in Slackware, but I was just checking a few things under the KDE Control Panel and when I go to play a system sound or tone it will play one tone and then crash my computer. I have a Sound Blaster PCI 128 and it's working correctly when I play CDs but not system tones or XMMS.

What could be the problem?

There is

xmms
freeamp
mp3blaster

amp

and a few others. Look around http://linuxmafia.org for them.

Have you tried to play an mp3 using amp or mpg123 when you're not in X?

You can _always_ play CD's, you don't even need a driver for your soundcard (remember the little cable that goes from your soundcard to your CDROM? http://www.linuxnewbie.org/ubb/wink.gif). CD audio goes directly to the soundcard, the driver is not involved.

I used to have a SB 128 and never had any problems with the sound in Slackware. Is the sound module (es1371 or es1370 depending on your card) loaded? If it's not load it by typing in this as root in a shell:

modprobe es1371

If that gives you errors type in this:

modprobe es1370

Then try to play some mp3's http://www.linuxnewbie.org/ubb/smile.gif

Well I tried amp and mpg123 from the command line and both of them crash my computer. The module for my Sound Blaster PCI 128 is ES1371 and it's loaded. Does anyone know why my computer is crashing when I try to play a Mp3 from either the command line or from X?
