Hello, i'd like to tweak my init scripts in Mandrake 8.1 to minimize the junk. I just wanna go through and take out stuff i don't need (for a normal setup).
any suggestions? All i want is video, sound, network, and that's about it.
Thanks

You can try /sbin/chkconfig. It has ways to list what's running, and enable/disable services in different run levels.
Or you can hack on it by hand, by screwing with the symlinks in the /etc/rc.d/rc?.d directories.

I was trying to go through manually. You know, like disable the /etc/issue file from being re-created by /usr/bin/linux_logo on every boot.
Just detailed stuff like that, which i don't need.
Any other suggestions?

/etc/issue is updated in /etc/rc.d/rc.local...
Otherwise, look through /etc/init.d (or /etc/rc.d/init.d, whichever exists) for the actual scripts.

Can someone explain this in ways that idiots can understand. I'm running MAndrake 9.1 on a AMD-K6 300mhz with 256mb RAM. I've removed some of the stuff using Mandrake Control Center despite accidently preventing GUI from starting up, It's become noticably faster. However even using light window managers like IceWM, its still not as fast as i'd like it to be. Linux is supposed to be know for speed(don't know if this is true while using window managers) I'd like to expereice some of this speed:D. Maybe someone could provide a list of which processes can an cant be disabled for a basic setup. Or maybe some other tips for speeding things up. (opinions welcome)
Thank You

Does Mandrake have a list of services on their site with an explaination of what they do? You could read the comments in the service scripts.
