I'm thinking of installing a linux version on my laptop. It's a Dell Inspiron 7500 and the Dell website has suggestions of using Red Hat linux.

I've had so many problems with Red Hat's linux (5, 6, 6.1, 6.2 then I gave up http://www.linuxnewbie.org/ubb/wink.gif, that I shudder.

I've used Debian (Libranet) and Mandrake 6, 7 and 7.1. They're a joy to use compared to Red Hat, which is only slightly better than Corel, but that's just me...

Lemme know what you guys think?

Mandrake 7.2 is easy to install, just installed it otherday on my Dell Inspiron 5000...but I've ran into some problems with XFree86 Server and the detection of my LCD Screen.

Otherwise, I'm sure that you won't have any major problems, especially since you have had prior experience. You might not want to autoboot into X though...and may have to do some XF86 configuring.

I'm a total newbie, but things are slowly progressing.

Good luck

Drake 7.X doesn't compare to RH 7.0, it's more comparable to RH 6.X with some hand holding (which is a joke when you're talking about RH).

The next version of Drake should be a bit more comparable to RH7 (but more stable). Why don't you stick with Debian?

I don't feel comfortable with RH, too many weird experiences with it. No that's not true, 6 was decent enough. But Mandrake comes with a TON of stuff (download isos) that it's hard to pass up. And it's also newbie friendly. Though I'm no longer a TOTAL newbie http://www.linuxnewbie.org/ubb/wink.gif

I'm afraid of using Debian because their install is kinda old and since this is my work laptop, I'd need the most help I can get to setup my PC card etc..., will install it on my new proxy-firewall though.

First of all, do not be scared of the Debian install. Actually, if you read everything about it on Debian's website, they tell you a lot of the information you need to have a successful install. Actually, of the distros I have tried, it was Debian that I got working correctly the soonest (word?) compared to rh, suse and mandrake.
Mandrake 7.0 was okay but had too many glitches that made me crazy.
On the other hand, have you considered Storm of Libranet? Debian-based distros. I'm very happy with how far Storm has come along. "Easier" install. I put that in quotes because that is a subjective word. http://www.linuxnewbie.org/ubb/wink.gif

Mandrake 7.2 continues the Mandrake line of easy installs, but contains a mix of the best stuff between RH 6.2 and 7.0 (ie it actually works where a lot of RH 7 does not, at least you need to use unintuitive things like kgcc).

Hmm, I think I'll give installing Debbie (Libranet's dist.) a shot on my laptop. If it doesn't go good on the first shot..., well that's what you guys are here for right?

First time I installed Libranet, I had trouble configuring my NIC, an ISA NE2000 comp and since a PC Card is a ***** to configure, even in Win-whatever, I just shudder slightly. But hey, you don't learn if you don't try http://www.linuxnewbie.org/ubb/biggrin.gif http://www.linuxnewbie.org/ubb/biggrin.gif http://www.linuxnewbie.org/ubb/biggrin.gif

I prefer Mandrake, but for laptops I recommend RedHat.
