I installed Slackware 7.1 on my 486 by downloading the a and n series to my pc and transfering them from my pc to the 486 by floppies. Only the a and n series are split up into floppies to be installed this way, hoping that you can setup the network using the n series.

I use @home which used dhcp to assign the ip. I had to download a file in order to setup dhcp, but I am required to use make. The problem lies in the fact that I have not installed a compiler on the system yet, nor can I because it is to large to transfer on a floppy, and I have no network support to ftp it.

So how can I use make without network support, and use the network without make?

You can see if you got 'zipsplit' installed (I thought it was in the 'a' packages) See zipsplit -h for info.

OR, If you're feeling lucky.... Boot up a windows box, let it get the @home ip assigned to it. Leave it connected to the line for now. Edit your /etc/rc.d/rc.inet1 disable dhcp and config eth0 to use the same ip/mask/network as the WinBox. restart inet (kill -HUP inet's ps#) Take the cable out of the winbox and connect it to the Linux box. Ping some sites and see if it didn't drop your connection. I've actually done this before with 95/NT and Linux. Kinda funny ;)

Ingenious second idea, but in case I'm not feeling so lucky, what exactly would I be using zipsplit for? (I know, I'm a complete n00b).

what file did you need to download???
the tcpip2 package in n8 included in the n series has everything you need to setup dhcp already. ref:

ftp://ftp.slackware.com/pub/slackware/slackware-7.1/slakware/n8/diskn8

have you tried running:
netconfig as root?

this script will set up your networking environment. (in your case, being a DHCP client)

hope this helps...

n8 is the only in the n series that cannot be installed by a floppy because it is ~14.3Mb. I ran netconfig, but it does not do much without that package. I just checked out the tcpip2.tgz and its 1.43Mb. A floppy only has 1.38Mb. Seems I can't win. http://www.linuxnewbie.org/ubb/frown.gif
