82801BA/BAM AC'97 Audio, Intel Corp.
driver: i810_audio
I did a google search on updating the above device/driver, but it was mostly PC advertisements containing that particular sound card.
Is this the most up to date driver out there? My sound is fuzzy....sounds like the internal volume settings are set way too high and its all distorted, but Kmix isn't helping either. Is there a newer driver, or do I need to mess with plugins? I read on another thread about someone with similar problems messing with the OSS driver in XMMS, but that didn't do anything for me either.
Running RedHat 7.3

I spent quite a long time getting my sound card configured correctly. I used ALSA (from http://www.alsa-project.org/), the latest version and followed the instructions from the sound card matrix. Start at the top middle link (SoundCards) and then go to Alsa sound card matrix and find your card.
Good luck

Hmmm.. I have the same audio system, I use the i810_audio module with OSS and everything works fine. However I have had a similar problem in the past. This might sound wierd, but with this kernel I built in PnP support. I have PnP enabled in my bios. Yesterday I was playing around with some other hardware and I shut it off, and my sound stopped working. So apparently it wants me to have PnP enabled. I wish I knew a little more about the inner-workings, but at least I have quality sound working. Another thing I have done differently this time, is to not have a bunch of audio drivers and tools that I dont need installed. Before I would get errors like "/dev/blah seems to be in use" or "make sure another application is not blocking /dev/blah". This is a Gentoo system, so I started from scratch to get my sound working, and this is the best sound I've gotten running linux on this system. Wish I could offer some more insight as to why, because I know its frustrating. Hopefully this was a little help anyway. Good luck.

thanks for the help so far. I'm having a bit of trouble about this:
ftp://ftp.alsa-project.org/pub
I have the directory created in /usr/src, but I'm not clear on what to put where?
for example, the file:
alsa-driver-0.4.1c.tar.gz
what do the '-0.4.1c' correspond to? hope this isn't too obvious, not lazy, but this learning Linux thing can be a bit tough to swallow at first ;)

I have the same i810 soundcard in my main Compaq Deskpro I use at work. My distro detected and setup the correct modules during installation.
I believe the modules it uses are
i810_audio
ac97 or ac97_codec
sound and/or soundcore
