My 20 gig HD is partitioned into two 10 gig parts. The C:\> drive has Win98SE installed, the D:\> area is where I intend to install Mandrake 8.2.
When I installed Win98SE, it also installed a "Recycling Bin" in D:\> which I am unable to remove. When I install Mandrake will it just "write over" everything that is now in D:\> ???

Umm.. your partition that you made for linux shouldn't be visible in windows (IE it shouldn't have put anything there). I suggest you change your partition and leave the 10gb unallocated, then have the linux tools properly install a filesystem on it.

FryGuy8,
I have heard your comment before, and don't understand it.
If I put a partition on the HD so that I can install Windows (without using the entire drive) how do I leave the balance of the drive "unallocated" ?? Windows is going to call that space D:\> even though nothing is installed there.
That basically is how my HD stands now, Win98SE is installed on the "front" of the drive and the "back" is empty.
As I understand the procedure, Windows has to be installed BEFORE Linux. Now that Win98SE is in place I am ready to install Linux.
How should I do it ????

It's easy!
Just reboot with CD1 in drive (always assuming your BIOS is set to boot from cd :D) during install, chose the correct partition to install into. (hda2 ?)
If you will need to share files between Windoze and Linux then a small fat32 partition as part of your Linux install is handy!
The installation will overwrite ANYTHING in the target partition!

As for the second partition - if it has not been formatted as a dos partition, Win98 will not see it.
If you want to try it, use a floppy boot disk for Win98, boot from it, choose command prompt or whatever, then fdisk - it will show you all the partitions on the hard drive. You can choose to delete the second partition, reboot into Win 98, and voila, as the english say, there will be a C drive in My Computer, but no D drive.
Win98 can only see fat-type formatted partitions ( not sure about NT ...)

YagottaBkiddin & other posters,
I "burned" copies of the OEM Mandrake CDs and put them away for safe keeping.
I just found out I labeled the Installation disks BACKWARDS !! #1 is second disk and #2 is FIRST disk. When I loaded "#2" the opening window popped up and I am ready to go.
