It's supposed to be that way. It's standard Unix procedure not to show stars or anything when typing in passwords. Simply type in your password and press enter. http://www.linuxnewbie.org/ubb/smile.gif

And, after that, you should see a prompt. This is similar to the old DOS prompt, where we saw C:\. Type ls to see the directory. or, even, dir. MAYBE you can do startx and actually get x-windows running, depending on how well the installation went. If not, post back, we'll try it. Ray

...Worked!
entered password and got a prompt and typed "startx" and Gnome came up and runs fine and I'm in and starting to learn.

Thank you.

Correction: by using Gnome, you're starting to use it. To learn it, you have to open that x terminal and type what you have to to do what you want to

How do I open "that x terminal"?

If you're in Gnome then click on the little TV icon with a foot that's on the toolbar (OK, Gnome Panel). Do not click on the TV with the moon in it. That one logs you out of gnome.

Next, get a book like "Running LInux" or "A Practical Guide to the Unix System" (or Linux System) By Mark Sobel. Actually, those 2 books complement each other nicely. The Sobel book is almost entirely command line (x term) stuff. Whereas the Running LInux book is a great overview kind of book.

Good Luck

Thank you for the direction. I'm going to look for these two books today.
