I have an Epson Stylus Color 880. It is on the HCL, but I can't get it to work. Well...not well anyway. It works, if you want to call it that. It's printing about 1 page every 10 min. Literally. And that is on the lowest resolution setting. The printer is a 12ppm printer.
The only person that the printer is available to is root.I'm on Mandrake with Gnome as desktop. I'm using the CUPS management software with the EPSON 880 driver. Why am I printing soooooo slloooow? Why is the printer available only to root? Thanks for all the help guys.

print queueing may not be working properly
what are you using? lpd or cups?
cups seems fine with me
maybe that will help

Actually you did mention it.
I don't really know the specific answer to get your printer working a little faster.
Have you checked your log files to see if there are any errors while printing? /var/log/messages
I don't usually have a local printer hooked up to any of the Linux systems I use. All remote/networked.
Any configuration tweaks in CUPS or lpd you could try? There should be some documentation installed with CUPS or you could try their website or even www.linuxprinting.org (http://www.linuxprinting.org)

I've searched all over the CUPS website as well as linuxprinting.org, but still no luck. The printer is working, but even on the lowest resolution setting it prints about 1 page every 10-15 min. I didn't see any errors. I'm using the latest version of CUPS, as well as the latest gimp-print driver. I dunno what else to try. One thing that was interesting though...
Last night while I was trying to get it to work, I turnrd off the printer in the middle of ptinting a test page, then turned it back on. Suddenly it started printing really fast, but it was just garble. It printed about 10 pages in under 60 secods though. :D Oh well...I need help here guys... :(

Wouldn't know what else to suggest.
Here's the Google search results for slow printing (http://www.google.com/linux?site=search&restrict=linux&hl=en&safe=off&q=slow+printing&btnG=Google+Search). Hopefully something there will help.

Thanks md...I had actually tried that also. I have spent my entire day here at work trying to get ideas for when I get home tonight.
When first installed the driver, and CUPS, I used the default crap in mandrake. Then I DL'ed the latest stuff and compiled it. Then tried to delete the printer from cups and add it again. When I add it the second time though, the driver looks the same (ie. the same list). Should I be pulling the new driver from somewhere else? Should I be going about installing the printer in a different fashion? Or am I doing it right by using hardDrak/mandrake control center?

I don't use Mandrake so I wouldn't know about using HardDrake or the CC.
Sorry as I have never used a local printer with Linux, all I could suggest was the search results hoping there would be an answer somewhere.
Anyone else have any suggestions?

the reason you can only print as root is because you don't have the permisions on your other accounts to print. gotta give them permisions. as for the slow printing.......i don't know. i really don't like printers.

I'll just try installing it from the console when I get some time this weekend. Thanks for the suggestions though...
