I had this same problem a while ago.
I went through some trouble installing it in /usr/local for my user account.
Like: making 10+ directories by hand and then chmod-ing others.
It's a pain also when you uninstall to re-install 'cuz it leaves an unknown file somewhere saying it IS currently installed.

Anyways: If you install it AS USER by-the-book it will install itself in your ~/ diretory. (You don't need it as ROOT, do you?) ;)

I still use so51, but this would probably work the same. I have soffice, the so executable symlinked to the directory that is the default when I do su root in an xterm, so I just have to type ./soffice there. ;)

what do you need staroffice for?

if you have koffice installed its just as good and doesnt hog resources as much

i installed staroffice 52 on a celly 400 with 128 meg of ram and plenty of hd space and it still dogged

hmmm....how did you install it? I originally installed the software as a single user version and had the same problem. It just would not start.

You can either install it without going to su mode. This will allow only you to use the software. Better though... do ./install network. Check the instructions that come with it cuz I'm going from memory here. In any case this installs a multiuser version of the software. Then you do a mini install for each user that wants to use the software. Just run normal install & the option will be there if you installed the multiuser version. Again check the install info that comes with the office software.

Hope this helps..
