This is a simple question with hopefully a simple answer.

I'm using StormLinux 2000 (v2.0.6) and have almost set it up to my liking.

But, the thing that is bugging me is kmix - specifically how to make the volume settings "stick" after a re-boot?

While I'm here I may as well ask for views on this - hdparm - after setting up hdparm to -c1 -d1 for all my HDDs I test it and the HDD specs increase from about 3-4 to 22 MB/sec. Quite an increase! But, there is no real noticeable "increase" in the speed of the OS - for example opening up /usr/bin of /dev takes several seconds under both hdparm settings and without the HDD tweaks.

Am I expecting too much from the hdparm "tweaking" in terms of system performance?

Thanks

No you are not expecting too much. Try to load/use a disk intensive app. Opening directories does not show much difference.

Ummm. What do you mean why did I put fiber in at home? I just got bored, and the only way to make it better is to just make it complicated as hell, and then I forget I'm bored. What other reason for a segmented, routed, linux+Novell+NT+2000 hybrid ethernet/FDDI/Token ring network for your home is there?

Try opening kmix, click file, save current settings as defaults.

Thanks, but there is no such creature as File->Save in Kmix under Storm Linux - it runs Kde1.1.2.

That turns on DMA and 32-bit I/O...while data transfer will speed up...isn't "speed" more visibly affected by more RAM and/or a faster CPU?

I can use hdparm to tweak my P100 w/ 40MB of RAM and it's just as slow using KDE or Netscape.

So, does turning on DMA/32-bit I/O make a difference if the CPU/RAM are on the lower end of the scale?

For the record... kmix is a kde app so if there doesn't seem to be a File->Save in the program, it's not a storm thing, it's a kmix/kde thing.
By the way, have tried "apt-get update" then "apt-get install kdebase"? KDE2 is pretty nice if you already like the orig kde.
