Alright, sorry if this has been asked alot or something, but I just can't get it to work. I login as my day-to-day username (not my root) and I start GNOME. In GNOME, I open the terminal emulator. I go to usr/X11R6/lib/xscreensaver/ which contains all of my screesaver files. I then try to type

$ ./xmatrix -root

to set my desktop as a screensaver. It doesn't do anything though. It doesn't return an error, it doesn't return a prompt... it just sits there. However, if I type in:

$ ./xmatrix -window

it opens the screensaver in a window. Do you have to have your desktop set at a certain resolution for this to work maybe? Any help would be great, because I am clueless...

It does work in KDE. There was a post that indicated that Nautilus draws to a level above root so the screensaver is running but below it so you dont see it. The same post said they noticed it with a window manager

you can tell nautilus not to draw the desktop. run the gconf-editor app and look through there. there are 2 places you need to turn it off.
