Hi,

I'm attempting to configure an Epson C20UX USB printer on a system running SuSE Linux 7.3 Professional. It appears that I need to install the GIMP-Printer driver/s and I have been directed to the LinuxPrinting.org site, and I have been able to see GIMP recommended for my printer. However, here is where I get completely confused... I am presented with numerous options, all of which make no sense at all to a complete Linux newbie like myself.

http://www.linuxprinting.org/show_printer.cgi?recnum=Epson-Stylus_C20UX

The above link is to the epson c20ux page, and the links given on it take me to the drivers options... what, in the name of sanity, do I need to do next? Which bit/s do I need to download? I believe that SuSE 7.3 can deal with CUPS and LPD, whatever that means. Please help. I am DETERMINED to get into Linux, as I like the "be your own mechanic and push your own buttons" mentality it offers. It's a little embarrassing for me to be thwarted by the inability to print anything.

Yours gratefully

PS, it's a stand-alone pc, dual boot (Win98)

as root, type /sbin/lsmod

see if there are any usb related modules running. That would be a first step.

Let us know what you find...

Hi, mychl, and thanks for a prompt reply.

Upon doing the /sbin/lsmod as requested I could only find 2 readouts that seemed to be of any relevance. The first I noticed was:

usbcore 47264 1 [printer uhci]

The second bit actually appears before the first one, but I noticed it contained "uhci" as did the one above:

uhci 22400 0 (unused)

I also noticed that during the startup screen the long list of initialisations contained the phrase

starting hotplugging devices (usb)

The rest of the lsmod output had many references to the soundcard and a few other things of which I am totally ignorant.

Hope this is useful for diagnostics.

Well, your USB is functioning OK. I did notice on the link you posted that there is a link to download ghostprint with your drivers pre-patched.

Go

here (http://space.tin.it/computer/wvtberti/linux/stp_driver/gs_stp.htm#PRECOMPILED%20RPMs) to get it.

It will be an rpm, so you should be able to type rpm -i filename.rpm

Good luck

Hi, again.

I downloaded CUPS 1.1.1.14-0 and used the RPM file manager to test and install. The test option didn't show any missing files... just 1 source file. I then asked it to install it for real and, this is where I've either done something wrong or left something out. There doesn't appear to have been anything different: the YAST2 tool printer configuration test facility still produces alarming sounds from the printer. Any more ideas for a confused newbie ?

Yours most gratefully
