usb mouse problem

I boot into linux and after a while in gnome (1.4), my mouse dies, but everything else works still. I get to a shell and cat /dev/usbmouse and move the mouse and I dont get anything. The LED in the mouse is still on, and I dont get this problem when I boot into windows. Thanks.

Have you checked your system logs (/var/log/messages) to see if you can spot the problem?

Also have a look in /var/log/XFree86.0.log for any errors about your mouse.

ah yes, here we go....

/etc/hotplug/usb.agent: missing kernel or user mode driver usbmouse

what I dont get is that it works fine up until this happens. I'm not adding or removing the mouse when it happens either.
