In my XF86Config file the Device in XSVGA driver is "Generic VGA" or "My Display Card". There is no further brand, manufacturer or chipset information about the display card.
How can the driver knows the right hardware details when starting X?
thanks!

Heh, that's a good one!
If you're using X 3.3.6: maybe you haven't installed other "separate" X servers ?
I don't know X 4.x.x yet. (Haven't needed it.) But 4 has all the separate servers integrated (so I've read.)
AFA your config file: are you sure you're reading the right one?
My Slackware installed a couple of 'em with slightly differing names in weird places besides the /etc/XF86Config one.
Hope any of this helps.

I am using RedHat 7 XFree is still 3.x.
My link to /etc/X is to xsvga. And I can start X at 1024x768 16bpp.
I just don't know how the xsvga server knows my display card hardware settings without evening mentioning its chipset's name in the XF86Config. Or does X refer to other locations for the settings

What video card do you have?
Mine did that when I was using X3.3.6 as it used the SVGA server and worked great at 1600x1200.
Guess it depends on how well your video card is supported and sometimes uses the generic SVGA.

Last time I installed RH7 it had XF86 4 on it. Check if you have a file called XF86Config-4.
And a (usually) quick way of sorting out config issues is by running Xconfigurator.
