Today I finally managed to get my adsl working :) :)

It's a long story that I won't bore you with, but to my eternal shame I ended up on AOL whilst between accounts, and so ended up with an aim account that I have used to set up GAim. Now it's only a couple of weeks ago that I changed to my current ISP and so I still have the AOL account active as a backup whilst I make sure this connection is stable but when I cancel it in a week or two, does that mean that I lose that GAim account? Is it a standalone program like ICQ or do I need to set something up for non-aol Linux users?

I never used it before which is why i'm a bit clueless, but it seems a waste to have it sat there now that I have the extra functionality.

Cheers

No, you can use all other Gaim protocols without your aim account. I use yahoo, msn and yahoo with gaim as I no longer have an aim account. Although there are standalone versions/equivalents of yahoo, icq and msn.

I'm willing to bet you won't loose your AIM screenname when you cancel your AOL account; I mean, many many many many people have AIM and have never had AOL.

That's what I was wondering since i've seen so many people quote aim as a contact but not so many using aol  The last time I tried icq I got spammed out of existence but I might give it another try along with the others now things are up and running and being able to use msn will certainly come in handy.

Thanks to you both
Ian

you may want to look into jabber/gabber, too. That's cool.

if by your aim name you are referring to the user name that you use to log on to aol to connect to the internet, then maybe. if you use a different user name for internet, and the one you want to keep for aim only, then you should be fine.

I know this doesn't have to do with gaim, I'm trying to download yahoo IM. Sometimes if I see someone I haven't talked to before I want to hit IM them and for some reason gaim won't do that so I wanted yahoo IM as a extra for that feature. I tried the rpm but for somereason I can't get it to install. Is there an easier way to download these rpms?
thank you for your help
