Hey I am beginning to get interested in the CLI as a default D/E. My question is, how hard is it to narrow down a Mandrake install so that it only installs what I need for the CLI?
I know I can pick an choose which packages I want installed but unchecking all the X-based programs can be an arduous task indeed. Is there an easier way?

If you are only going to do CLI, why Mandrake? Use Debian or something that will do CLI in no time. Debain base install will take only a few minutes and you got OS and that's it. http://www.linuxnewbie.org/ubb/biggrin.gif

Just something to consider...
I seem to recall a window manager for X called 'twin' for 't'ext 'win'dow manager. I think it is something like a curses-based X or something. I'd imagine it would scream on low end systems, but still give you some of the conveniences of a window manager (multiple windows, etc)

Well, I managed to get Storm installed and am posting this messege from links! I had to figure out w3m in order to get links d/l'ed and installed, now onto finding some kind of text based chat program. I've heard of one called "jaim" which is a text aim program but I couldn't figure out how to get it installed and running.
Anyone got this thing figured out yet? It would be great to have a text based client that would allow me to chat with the rest of my AIM usin' family.
Oh well.....onward.

Why storm? Jump directly to Debian (much better, secure, more stable, free-er, etc.)

Don't have a Deb CD but I'll get one and give it a shot. Also, how do I reduce the S I Z E of the fonts in CLI. Too fsckin' big for my tastes. I know I should do a search for it but I'm too lazy this late at night. http://www.linuxnewbie.org/ubb/smile.gif
