I am currently running Mandrake 8.1 and I am wanting to update to either Mandrake 8.2 or the new 9.0 when it is available in a stable release.
My question is this: Can I simply "upgrade" by running the new install discs? or do I need to "upgrade" everything manually?
I am wanting to use the newer Kernel, KDE 3.0+, and the newer "features" of the Mandrake distro.
What is going to be the best way to accomplish this without losing data that I already have?

I dunno if this works or not, but I just installed 8.2 and it had an upgrade button.

What for? The differences between 8.1 and 8.2 are negligible. 8.2 might even be called a step backward by some. Upgrade KDE,or upgrade your kernel it's much easier and 8.2 is missing a ton (300) of packages and loaded up with a bunch of "buyme" crap.

This is the first I have heard of this "buy me" nonsense. Are they putting a lot of stuff in their distro that is not GPL?

I strongly disagree with this assessment of Mandrake 8.2. 8.2 is a large step ahead of any other previous version of MDK.
The CDs that I had for 8.2 had more packages than ever and not a single plea to "buy" stuff. As always, 8.2 was a perfect gentleman and only installed what I asked for, the installer was much smarter than the previous installer, and the whole thing worked better out of the box than anything I had previously installed.
Yeah, it still had some bugs that require work-arounds to get some jobs done, but nothing that impeded me from using my laptop or any of the essential software.
However, since you ("some_idiot") seem to be far from an idiot :) , and are considering alternatives, I would strongly recommend waiting for MDK 9.0 -- after the bugs have been shaken in the Release Candidates.

I know that Mandrake 9 RC3 is out but does anyone know when the full release will be out?

They obviously intended RC2 to be the final RC, but I assume obvious bugs made a third RC necessary. So, I imagine the answer to your question is that nobody really knows. I would expect it to be in the next week - 10 days, though, considering the pace of testing so far.

Here's an iso of the missing packages http://www.nixnuts.net/
and if you're wondering what they used the cd space for look on
Commercial CDs 1 & 2.
What first started me on this hunt? Where's Blackbox? Bbtools but no blackbox is really stupid.

Thanks for the info guys. I have decided to just update what I want to update and leave it at that for now. My last step is to update the Kernel. Wish me luck! LOL!
