I have looked and looked on red hats site but could not find any info. Please any advice. fancypiper 09-15-2002, 01:34 PM i386 - compiled to run on intel 386 processors and above i686 - compiled to run on pentium II (I think, it may be pentium pro) and above. biotechnician 09-15-2002, 01:53 PM So what kernal build should I use on a Pent III or does it really matter? mdwatts 09-15-2002, 02:14 PM Set the processor type during the kernel config. # # Processor type and features # # CONFIG_M386 is not set # CONFIG_M486 is not set # CONFIG_M586 is not set # CONFIG_M586TSC is not set # CONFIG_M586MMX is not set # CONFIG_M686 is not set # CONFIG_MPENTIUMIII is not set ** THIS ONE ** mdwatts 09-15-2002, 02:16 PM Perhaps I misread your question... Will you be compiling your own kernel or installed a rpm package of the kernel? Compile as I suggested previously and if rpm, use the i686. biotechnician 09-15-2002, 02:18 PM No I am downloading the new Redhat 8.0 and they have several version i386 and i686. I am a bit confuess about whcih one is what. biotechnician 09-15-2002, 02:22 PM I noticed that in redhat 7.3 they only offer the i386 but in 8.0 they have both. mdwatts 09-15-2002, 02:55 PM PIII = i686 So download the i686. biotechnician 09-15-2002, 03:08 PM Thanks, I tried that but now I can not register the os with redhat. Somthing about not being subscribed to that channel. biotechnician 09-15-2002, 03:28 PM Thanks, I tried that but now I can not register the os with redhat. Somthing about not being subscribed to that channel. mdwatts 09-15-2002, 03:33 PM Since I've never used Redhat and know nothing about subscribing to that channel, hopefully one of our many members that use Redhat can help. justlinux.com
