What are the advantages and disadvantages to each? Which one do you prefer and why? I have gnome on my computer but that's only because it's the default install with Red Hat. Everyone else seems to use KDE

Also, is it pronounced 'nome' or 'guh-nome'?

There aren't really advantages to using one over the other...it's basically which one you like more. The disadvantage of both of them is that they are HUGE! They take an exceptionally long time to load and have so much stuff running that it uses a heck of a lot of memory. I personally prefer WindowMaker :)
I personally prefer GNOME. It seems that gnome's apps are faster, smaller and prettier. I prefer GTK over QT. KDE always looks a bit bloated.
Oh...and it's guh-nome :) See here if for some reason you don't believe me:

GNOME 2 is suprisingly lean. KDE 3 on SuSE 8.0 ran slower then everything else on my machine.
And with GNOME, you can use Window Maker. Thats always cool.

I moved this thread to the Window/Desktop Manager forum so you will see the other KDE Vs. Gnome thread and hopefully benefit from that one as well.
