but I'm having problems. I'm running Red Hat 7.3 and I bought an external USB modem just for Linux but it's not recognizing it. I heard that all USB modems should work well but mine doesn't seem to. I have a book on Linux (Red Hat Linux 7.2 Unleased) but it hasn't been really any help. The modem that came with my PC runs on the motherboard so I assume this won't work. If I got this right it falls under the WinModem label. I don't know what else to do. I went through the Dial Up Config programs through GNome and KDE and neither detected the modem. Is hope lost or is there a solution?

I think you misunderstood. External modems that connect to the serial port (not usb) will work.

You have some research to do...

Redhat 7.3 manuals (http://www.redhat.com/docs/manuals/linux/RHL-7.3-Manual/)

Modems NHFs (http://linuxnewbie.org/nhf/Modems)

Modem HOWTOS (http://www.tldp.org/HOWTO/HOWTO-INDEX/hardware.html#HWMODEMS)

Actually I was told USB by one of my instructors. I don't know if maybe he was thinking something else at the time or what. I even showed him the modem after I bought it. The damn thing cost me $50 too. It's actually useless and I've had it far too long to return it. It's a good piece of news to know though. Hey could I use a USB to serial converter with this? I don't know if they sell them but it be cheaper than the alternative.

Try the USB modem documentation at http://www.linux-usb.org/USB-guide/book1.html
