i try to update the glib ot gtk cause a program says it need to , and the auto updater doesnt work , so i dontload whatever i need and follow read me step by step and i always get some kind of error !

is linux this hard ?? or am i just missing stuff , i cant even find how to uninstall things .

i dunno i thought linux would be a good alterative to windows , i thought i could help support the movement that would help give MS compitition , but man im beating my head againt the wall here :(

i think linux needs to work on its friendliness if it ever wants to rival MS

rant over , i needed to vent :-\

Learning something as complex as Linux/Unix is never easy nor is something you can do in a couple of days. Anything worthwhile takes commitment on your part. Plenty of reading and experimenting. I've been using Linux for over a year and still class myself as a newbie. Most of it I still don't understand.

Did you want help with your specific problem? If so, then post the error and we can try to help.

i know , it was late and i was busting my head trying something , i just needed a vent .

i guess i thought i could get a foot hold in linux and then learning the hard stuff would come when i wasnted to be more advanced , but it starts right off. after years of learning the in's and out's of windows , its tough dealing with being a newbie again ... oh well lil time im sure ill be fine .. oh and dont worry ill be posting my problems , im going to try to solve my recent one 1 more time on my own ...

What distro are you using? I started out with Redhat and Mandrake and though the install is easy and your hardware often works, the .rpm system is horrible.
I know a lot of people recommend these distros to newbies, but it is easy to create a system with TONS of dependency problems after installing several new packages.

Even though many would say Slackware is a distro for the experienced, I found it easier. There are FAR fewer dependency problems. I would recommend installing Slackware with the basics that you need. Then install everything from source.
It may be a pain to get Slack up and running, but once you do it is smooth sailing.

I'd recommend SuSE I guess (even though it has RPMs) I never had (many) problems with it. If you have a good internet connection, you can download it (5 gigs for a full install) or buy it.

I think it's pretty easily configured and up-to-date for the most part...

Just letting you know that you are not alone. (me n00b too) I have spent many hours banging my head against the wall also. Hell I d/l'ed slackware 8 and I literally spent all last weekend setting up X! Yeah its frustrating but just think how l33t we'll be in a couple months! :D

I don't know about you, but first i downloaded the Mandrake, tryed it, loved it
then i bought the PowerPack Mandrake 8.0, and since i installed it, the only problems i had, were becouse i did something wrong, and not becouse it's hard to install or remove, or etc.... I NEVER (till now) had any problems with RPM, and i like the way it works - everythink automatical, and add himself to the menu ..... Does something else works the same way as RPM ? I don't know. Till now, the only thing i didn't configured yet is the 3dfx, but i already know how to do it, just need to get home ...
So, if you really love the system, and really don't love Microsoft, and don't like to pay all your money for software - just format your HD, and strat over, but this time, just read the Readme/HOWTO, talk with people on IRC, then install the package !!
I would like to help with anything i can, if you want, just email me : phazeman@yahoo.com
