For user and X:

Change the line in /etc/X11/Xwrapper.config from
"allowed_users=root_only" to "allowed_users=console"

I hate to piggyback on your post but I know Rod knows debian so I wanted to ask something. How would I go about apt-getting KDE2 (really just need KOffice, Konqueror and Kmail) and is the helixcode in the unstable tree better than that of potato?

veloctTX... take a look at this thread:
http://www.linuxnewbie.org/ubb/Forum1/HTML/012775.html

After installing kdebase:

apt-get install konqueror koffice-common kmail

Don't forget to edit /etc/apt/souces.list and put it back to original configuration or comment out the lines with unstable.

As far as I can see, the difference between Helix running on potato or woody, not much of a change. At the moment anyway.

Regards,
Rod

Thanks Rod. I'll post when I get a chance after I run the updates.

I will add that I didn't use a script like that.
I use Storm and simply did this to add kde2 to gdm.

cd /etc/gdm/Sessions
ln Debian kde2

That did the trick.
You're using pure Debian so YMMV.

While in /etc/gdm/Sessions you can also remove the old "kde" choice with rm kde or something like that.

Well, I got kde2 (base packages) installed. I don't use kde2 so I am not bothering with having it show up as an option. I use Enlightenment and if I change I use gnome. Also I got konqueror setup and running. kmail and koffice-common gave me errors and would not download. Basically the error was saying that they are part of another file and thus not getable. I think kmail is part of kdeutils but I'm not sure. The main thing was getting konqueror. Balsa and the other "office" tools will work for now and if not I can always get Star Office installed. I know that the parts of koffice can be downloaded separately and koffice is basically a shell that has all the programs under one gui. I believe is koshell. I'll try those out and see how they work and let everyone know. Aside from that I got my box running everything I need and it works well. I've learn quite a bit about apt-get and dkpg that I don't really use the storm package manager at all. Thanks Rod and Coldpack.

ONe more thing. When you type #In Debian kde2. What is the name of the package that installs In?

That would be ln as in link, not I... http://www.linuxnewbie.org/ubb/smile.gif So you'd be doing a hard link (as opposed to a symlink).
And I don't use SPM, either.

It's really nice but still needs a lot of work before it hits 1.0.
But when it does it will be VERY nice!
I'm not kidding.
It blows everything out of the water.
It'll be nice to have an app like that for everyday use.
