Getting frustrated trying to set up a linux machine

The majority the the machines we use are running Win2000 (Pro and/or Server). Each has two cards and we have no problems surfing.

I'm trying to set-up a linux machine that will eventually be a firewall. The problems is I cannot connect. I've tried using linux 8.1 and 8.2). I want to establish connectivity before I start on the fw.

I'm using static addresses on both of the cards. I can ping the interior cards of our servers but I cannot ping their exterior cards. I've checked the route table, the network-scripts, the /etc/sysconfig/network file, hosts file etc all appear correct.

Suggestions.

First, try /sbin/ifconfig, to make sure both nics are active and have ip addys.

Second, there is not linux 8.1.... my guess is that you are using mandrake linux.... in which case you should say you are using mandrake8.x. Just an fyi so that you can better inform us of your situation so we can better help you....
