Gnome Power management will not work!

I've tried and tried to get gnomes power management to work since day 1 in Mandrake 8 and Redhat and my screen will not power down at all period. It will power down in KDE and in Linux but not in Gnome. I've tried installing any power managment related packages I could find but nothing has worked I have tried for weeks to get it to work.. does anyone know how? thanks

As far as I know, both KDE and Gnome power management is just a front end for the linux config anyway, check to make sure your apmd service is running then work from there. I could be wrong on this one, I should only be ranting for the remainder of the day.
