I have 2 computers, and one phone line.
PC-1
733 mhz, 56k winmodem, 128mb ram...sits next to the phone jack. Windows98

PC-2
733mhz 56k winmoden, 64mb ram...in a room without phone jack.
Windows 98/linux partitioned.

I would like to have both computers to be online at the same time, using my one phone line. How can I do this? I know absolutely nothing about networking, and I just installed linux-mandrake 8.2 on PC-2 for the first time yesterday.

Do I have to buy anything? Is there a website that can help me do this? I really don't have a clue how to do it....Any help would be awesome. Thanks

For Hardware....

at a minimum:

1 ethernet card in each PC and a crossover cable (cat5).

the "better" way:

1 ethernet card in each PC, 2 normal cat5 cables, a hub or a router/switch

Ok, I'm reading the Easy Internet-Sharing NHF, and So far I need:
3 ethernet adapters,
a hub or switch,
RJ45 cables, 3 of them I think?

Where do I get these....Does anybody have like a small estimate of how much this is gonna cost me?

And what KIND of manufacturer should I get? I'm mainly going for low cost...or I'd just have another phone line installed.

Min hardware config:
2 Ethernet cards $5.00 - 30.00
1 RJ45 CAT 5 crossover cable $5.00 - 10.00

Prefered hardware config:
1 10/100 4/5 port ethernet hub $30.00 - 60.00
2 RJ45 CAT 5 ethernet cable $5.00 - 10.00
2 Ethernet cards (same as above)

Any local computer store i.e. Best Buy should have everything except maybe the crossover cable. Any hub will be compatable. Most ethernet cards will work but check with Mandrake's compatability list just to make sure. Check with local computer stores or computer groups to see if there are any swap meets where you can get older generation hardware. You can check mail order prices at www.pricewatch.com for cheap stuff too.

No need to get a second phone line.

what about this line?

RJ45 cables. Obviously you'll need these to connect your Ethernet adapters to the hub. You'll need one for each Ethernet adapter you've got. Make sure you get a straight-through cable and not a crossover cable!

Straight-through cable, and not crossover cable. Which one do I pick?
