I have a feeling that once the answer to this is posted, I'm going to smack myself pretty hard in the forehead, but this is what a newbie forum is for, right?

Anyway, I installed my first working Linux distribution (Mandrake 8.2) yesterday and I'm having no trouble with ANYTHING....except for the sound card. It's a Creative AudioPCI 64D (Chipset 1373), but Harddrake seems to think its a 1371. There's no way that I can find to tell it otherwise. There's not even an option for it under the hardware tools in Harddrake.

So does anyone want to be a pal and tell me how exactly I go about fixing this? I don't want to have to flip over to Win2k every time I want to listen to an mp3 or CD. I loves me music and if I can't listen to it while playing around with Linux, I'm not gonna be too happy.

Thanks in advance.

I'm not for sure but I think it use the ES1371 driver for that card. Try installing it and see what happens.

As root user and at the command line prompt, type:

insmod es3171 or whatever the exact name of this driver is.

Ok, tried that and it gave me this:

[root@localhost root]# insmod es1371
Using /lib/modules/2.4.18-6mdk/kernel/drivers/sound/es1371.o.gz
insmod: a module named es1371 already exists

It seems to think that it's working fine. I can pull up the mixer and play a CD. I just can't HEAR anything.

Suggestions?

Oh, and under the KDE Configuration, it tells me that there is no information available for my soundcard. That is, under the Information tab.
