I have overcome many obstacles to try to use a linux machine as an office workstation. I have solved many problems, but there is a small problem that causes a lot of trouble - I cannot find an icq client for Linux working with SOCKS server. So even if I have the enormous wish to swithch to linux once for all, I cannot afford losing connection with my friends and colleagues online.
I am running RedHat 6.1 on a Intel machine.
Can anyone help?

Interestingly enough as I pulled up your comment I was also working on installing licq and was just reading about how to do SOCKS on it. I think it will work for that but I do not know how to configure it. View the readme that comes with it for information on how to set it up. go to www.freshmeat.com and search for licq.

Thanks. I'll look at it. By the way, I am surprised after all the talking about the potential of Linux, I cannot find key apps, that can help Linux in the long run - instant messaging toolsq that are the key to success in the future. Anyway - if you succeed configuring icq to work in Linux with SOCKS server, please let me know. And have in mind that this is a heavy blow to the Microsoft empire http://discussions.linuxplanet.com//smile.gif)

I have licq working on my machine again but I don't use SOCKS so I can't really help you other then pointing you at the README.socks. I also have Gaim which is a Aol Instant Messenger Clone running. There is also IRC chat and BBS's.
P.S. As I really get to know Linux, use it a lot and get it configured the way I want it, I wonder how I ever lived in a MS world

You are perfectly right. After being for so many years in the dos/windows world and trying linux its like going from the desert into the woods - I am fascinated from the Linux opportunities. What pisses me off - if you're no experienced programmer, you cannot get used to it. Every step I've taken in Linux was very, very difficult. Reading endless HOWTO files, trying to figure out the options for scripts, complilers and simple commands (even like mount http://discussions.linuxplanet.com//smile.gif))) ANd thigs that are simple as 1+1 in windows and take minutes have taken me weeks to figure out - sharing of drives, sound, fonts.. I talk too much http://discussions.linuxplanet.com//smile.gif))
Thanks man, glad to have spoken to you
