hello, where is the file to edit that starts up all those startup programs like "apache" and "sendmail"? i thought they were in /etc/inetd.conf? when i checked there, it was blank... oh, and does kernel 2.4.0 release contain support to use ipchains and/or iptables and does it include built-in pppoe for adsl connections? thanks for anything you can help me with...

As for the kernel questions: iptables and pppoe are both natively supported in 2.4.0

It's easier to use control panel and add or remove stuff to start up at boot.

thanks for replying so soon! ill try these out, oh and what do you mean by iptables and pppoe natively builtin? does that mean i still can use ipchains if i can't figure iptables out? and will i see an option for PPPOE in kernel config? i tried compiling a 2.4.0 kernel earlier and did not see any option for a PPPOE thing... how would i get PPPOE to work in 2.4.0 if i wanted to use it? is it used the same way as PPP? /etc/ppp.conf?
