please help me. i used an rpm to put RH 7.3 on my box. it was originally xine 0.9.8 until i tried to make it dvd usable. i tried to input d4d and d5d from URL=http://www.captaincss.tk/]http://www.captaincss.tk/[/URL]. d4d was fine but d5d wouldn't go saying that i needed to have xine 0.9.10 or later.
so i went to http://xine.sourceforge.net and got updates. they wouldn't upgrade cause i was trying to use tarballs when the original was installed via rpm. so i tried to use the rpm versions to upgrade to ver 0.9.13 which wouldn't work. saying that i should install xine-lib which i tried to install xine-lib-0.9.10.tar.gz and that was fine. then i tried xine-lib-0.9.11.tar.gz cause if you see the note above it says that it is looking for checking for XINE-LIB version >= 0.9.10. i am at a loss. what am i doing wrong???????????????????

why didnt you just uninstall the rpm and install the latest tar.gz source? did you try looking at that ld.so.conf file?

Rpms can be quirky when mixed with compiled installations. Did you remove the old installation using rpm?

Possibly, you could install it easier with automatic dependency resolution using Red Carpet (http://www.ximian.com/products/ximian_red_carpet/).

No i used a program called webmin to uninstall the program. i will check out red carpet. what is it??

You need to tell the system where the xine libraries are...

Do the following:
# export LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/usr/local/lib:$LD_LIBRARY_PATH

and then do your install. You can also edit your /etc/ld.so.conf and add /usr/local/lib to it. Then run ldconfig by itself (not sure if you need to run ldconfig but it can't hurt)

Then you can do your install without any problems.

Doing the export is probably the quickest.

i ran /etc/ld.so.conf and it said that i don't have permission as root.

just do the export line in the directory where you extracted xine.

Then do your configure..etc... to install.

You don't need to run /etc/ld.so.conf. That is just a configuration file telling your system where to search for libraries.

i looked at the ld.so.conf and i wasn't allowd to run it as root. i did uninstall the rpm of xine and i can't install either the rpm or the tar.gz of xine. anyother ideas???
