DO NOT REINSTALL!!!!
Ok, slowly, very carefully, get yourself a copy of tomsrtbt (http://www.toms.net/rb/) and boot your system with it. You can then mount your root partition and any dependant partitions, then edit your /etc/lilo.conf file as necessary, rerun lilo and reboot. If that doesnt do the trick, backtrack and see what you may have missed when installing the new kernel.

didnt work, guess i should have posted that i use system commander for my boot loader, it loads first and then lilo loads. i have a dual boot system with linux on the second HDD. It wont load, it tells me invalid system disk.

If you have Linux somewhere on your system with just a busted kernel, then "tomsrtbt" will work. Just boot it with:
linux root=/dev/hdbX (where X is the number of the partition that is mounted as /)

You probably did something like not compile ide support or ext2 fs support into the kernel. http://www.linuxnewbie.org/ubb/smile.gif
Did you save you old working kernel?
Boot up tomsrtbt. Mount the / partition of your distro from within tomsrtbt. (Example: mount /dev/hdb5 /mnt -t ext2)
Then do:
chroot /mnt/
Then enter the name of you old working kernel in lilo.conf, run /sbin/lilo, and and reboot.

Do you have a way to test if your floppy drive works? If so, check the tomsrtbt FAQ. It sounds like you need to reformat that floppy and reinstall tomsrtbt to it.
