I hate be be redundant, and I appreciate the several responses I received on this same question, but none of them worked!! When I talk to AT&T, some dummy says that AT&T doesn't support Linux.but I know this isn't true!! Right??? The basic problem is that I connect up to the isp, but then get a daemon disconnect when user/password is asked. They claim that they did not issue me one different from my present user/pw which works fine in WIN98.

What type of service is AT&T providing to you, cable, dsl, dialup?
I assume you use dialup, if so there's docs on their WURD site that explain howto setup the pppd under varius Linux's, Unices systems...the problem you most likely experence is that you trying to use pap but AT&T dialup service uses chap authentication thus your pppd is failing...in /etc/ppp there's a file called options put debug on a single line and see the errors this time they should be more verbose.
Also create /etc/ppp/chap-secrets file and put your isp's username, password there and make sure root can only access the file for security reasons.Hope this helps.

I know that the AT&T ISP has several problems with Linux. Redhat has a special option when doing you dial-up config with AT&T you should try Redhat to see if it can help you.

You were right, you did talk to a dummy at ATT who was too stupid or lazy to tell you what you needed. The trick is to use your real user name, something like longnumber@worldnet.att.net and your real password something like diddle-bum. Go to the program files in win 98, find the ATT section, and you should find a type of text file that gives these along with the dns nrs. you need. ;)
