I am having problems connecting with Mandrake 8.2 using the in built dial up KPPP. it goes fine until 'initializing modem....' where it hangs. i have tried in root to no avail.my modem is not a winmodem and is on com2(/dev/ttyS1 right? ):) i did a google search and the nearest i could find is this (http://www.experts-exchange.com/Networking/Linux_Networking/Q_10224017.html) but this did not solve the problem. i would really appreciate any help since i need to use window$ just to connect and am doing countless reboots:confused: :(

Open a terminal and run it. Check the error messages in the term output.

thank u very much for the links, i have just managed to work my way through them, (its difficult bein a newbie:D) but to no avail. i did try run it in a terminal but got no error messages. i fear it it is the modem not being supported.
thanks anyway,

Click on your kppp(internet dialer)>Setup>Modem tab>Query Modem and see what happens.

The modem should initialize then give you a status report of all your ATI's.

Also at the modem tab is the Terminal button you can click on. That will initialize (well it should, I mean) and output OK to screen. Maybe there you will get some errors.

What kind of modem do you have? Internal, external?

You could also run as root 'wvdialconf wvdial.conf'

I hope this package is on your box. If not, download-install from your distro (RH, Mandrake, whatever)

wvdial is another dialup program that will look for your modem and setup according to your modem specs. I always run this command while sitting in /etc. I forgot why I do that. But the results will show on screen and end up in /etc/wvdial.conf for you to look at.

If wvdial can't do anything with your modem then I will guess your OS thought your modem was something else and configured it wrong. That has happened to me before in Mandrake with my US Robotics Courier.
