I'm trying to install Mason on my Redhat 6.2 box. I get an error that says that I need ipchains and ipfwadn to use this product. Does anyone have any info about ipchains or ipfwadn? Or does anyone know any better firewall solutions

I don't know about mason, but I'm assuming it is just a frontend/rule generator for ipchains, that would explain why you need it. I am usually weary of these things, and would look for either an online tutorial, or book that explains ipchains, its really not very hard to learn, hell even I have a pretty good grasp on it. Hope that helps

Any tips on how to get ipchain going on my machine or configure my kernel to start it?

You will need to recompile your kernel to add ipchains. You could try the latest which I believe to be 2.4.6 at www.kernel.org (http://www.kernel.org)

There are a couple of NHF's on the subject of compiling your own kernel that should help plus the docs at the above site and what's included with the kernel source.

http://www.linuxdoc.org/HOWTO/IPCHAINS-HOWTO-5.html

I found this link to be helpful.

Be forewarned that firewalls can cause lot 'o messaging.

Also not extremely secure to have firewall on the same box as other network functions.

Good luck.

So if ipchains are not a good way to do a firewall, can you suggest a good product to protect my box?
