I was told from my ISP (cox communications) that they do not support linux o/s's to connect to the internet directly. Is this true or false? currently, I have mandrake 8.2 running through a WINXP machine and am connected, but real slow. 40.9 kbps. That is worse that a dialup conncection. I let XP setup the home networking. It bridged the connections, assigned the IP addy to the second Net card.
I setup netconf as I was suppossed to and got connected. Is there anything I should look at to maybe speed this connection up?
If you connect your cable modem to your linux box with an ethernet cable, you will have no problem at all. Just configure your IP using DHCP.
If you have multiple computers, I very highly recommend getting a router. It makes everything so simple, and they're cheap if you get one on sale.

how is 40.9 kbps slower then dial-up? I remember(about a month ago) my dial up giving me 3kbps MAX. and you only get abuot 6kbps with 56k...
on another note, I would suggest doing a router. Linksys works nicely. (set up in win2k, don't know if its required) nic to router. router to cable modem (through ethernet). cable modem to internet.

40.9 is slow... that was kbps, not kps, a 56k modem can do 53 kbps on a good connect. Anyhow, I resolved my problem. I did not use DHCP, I went pboot option and entered my IP addy and submask and I am flying..
Now at one test site, bandwithplace.com I am showing 1.3mps. Cnet shows 446.6, but they seem slow anyway.
