I read on this board that a lot of people think Red Hat sux.
Tell me why? People just say it sux without saying why.
I think Red Hat 6.2 rules, simply because it's simple, without all the bull****ting around.
My experience...
When I would try to do a custom install I could never get everything to work and when I used their install I was already at about 15% drive space used without adding anything. Now I have Debian. Everything works out of the box [except with 2 NIC's. See post about Debian and 2 NIC's in General. please...?] and the space used is currently at 4%. I also didn't have to deal with Debian advertisements everywhere or busy a$$ FTP sites when trying to get something downloaded [though it may come soon].

it has a LOT of security holes for one. Have you seen how many updates Red Hat has for security alone. I also do not like RPM a whole lot. I prefer Slackware's packaging method, or even Debian and its apt. I prefer non red hat based distros. I have found that they are more stable and not geared so much towards the newbie.

But that's for the programs isn't it? Like wuFTPD & others?
It would be good if Red Hat would choose carefully to what software is included in their distro though.

thats true that the bugs lie within software, but Red Hat is shipped with the same software as say Debian or Slackware (for the most part), and yet they don't have nearly the amount of security problems as Red Hat.

for one thing the last time i used redhat linuxconf was useless and from things i read it still is. i much prefer slackware's approach of just letting you edit config files by default.
and on general principle the more people that use redhat the more the big companies will just consider redhat==linux which ruins all the choice we have with linux.

The beauty of Linux (all distros) is that it has stopped the "Unix Wars" that gave Bill G. such a leg up. It would be terrible to see Linux go the way of the Unix variations because of infighting and inability to agree on standards.
Linux is Linux is Linux - it's what each of us is looking for or we wouldn't be using this forum. It's not the distro that's important!
-OK, off the soapbox-
Sorry, can't tell you why I hate RH because I don't:
o Most sowftware vendors porting to Linux choose RH as the 1st platform
o Most hardware vendors port their drivers to, and test their hardware first on RH
o Most software vendors only "officially" support RH Linux for their software to run on
o Like most distributions, you don't have to use any of the GUI interfaces (like linuxconf, Gnome/Sawfish etc.) but instead can do it the old-fashioned way if you prefer
o RH has, by far, the most robust, intuitive and optionally diverse installation process of any distro (which is why, in part, it so completely dominates the market)
o Like other distro mfrs, RedHat is also wholly committed to the Linux community; not just the distro, but embedded, service/training/education.
o RH brings Linux to the public. Go to a brick computer store and look for Linux. What do you see? RedHat. Only. RH allows non-weenies (like us) to purchase RH and become Linux weenies (like us).

I've seen Red Hat, SuSe, Slackware, Caldera, and Mandrake all in one computer store.

I don't http://www.linuxnewbie.org/ubb/smile.gif
But I still don't use it, because I like apt better than RPM

I haven't used RPM in a while. I like to have more control when installing software.

So do I. That's why I use http://www.linuxnewbie.org/ubb/wink.gif apt-get http://www.linuxnewbie.org/ubb/wink.gif all the time!

I liked RH 6.2 alot it worked out really good but then i got my hands on 7.0 and it seemed super... for a while until i discovered a bunch of stuff that made me really disapointed with RH.
Because they are so commersial nowadays they have to make an on the edge distro with real cool features. To get this they grab a bunch of really unstable software, nightly builds of libc and gcc. And then they release it, not as test version, unsupported or a word about it, as a real distro version.

I had major problems with 7.0.
I did an upgrade and the X screen was screwed. I don't think it liked my video card.
I hear from many people that RH 7 is a very bad release, so I will wait until 7.2 comes out.
It doesn't even come with KDE 2 http://www.linuxnewbie.org/ubb/confused.gif

As I understand it, RedHat releases *.0 are the unstable releases. The *.1 releases have most bugs fixed and the *.2 releases are supposed to be the stable releases.
I am running RedHat 6.2 and I don't have to use rpm to install. I haven't used linuxconfig on my last install as it did unexpected things to some files. I edit configuration files.
I just disabled unnecessary daemons and have logged no attacks.
I'm well satisfied with it and I can simlink anything specific to RedHat to any location I desire.
I agree with mattmorrow's observations as well and that is why I chose RedHat.
I am thinking of ordering LC Linux from Linux Central and try some more when I can find time.
It beats the hell out of my other os (Windows 98).

i don't think redhat sucks, i have not had any probelms with it at all. i use linuxconf for some stuff (setting up printer...maybe something else....service acitivity i have tried) anyway i with teh exception of apt-get i have found redhat to be as good as any distro.
