I'm trying to get an install up on another box if mine, but I'm having hd problems. When I put in the cd and boot to the installer. I start as normal. However, I get the following:
FAT: unable to read boot sector
Kernel panic: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on 09:00
What i nthe hell does this mean and how do I get around it?
Thanks

What if anything did you do to prepare the HD for install?

All I did was hook it up. I have it set properly for master. However, it did come out of another pc I had that was win2k, so I don' know if would affect it in any way.
Strangely enough, I've seen 3 people on a different Linux board say that they got the same errors when installing Redhat 7.3 until they disabled the Power Management option in their BIOS. I know it sounds weird, but it can't hurt...
If that isn't it, I'd strongly suggest deleting the existing Win2k partition(s) with Windows fdisk before installing Linux.

Ok well the power management thing worked, so thank you very much for that. However, new problem hence topic title change. No when it's time to put in disk 2, I do so and am told" Unable to mount cd". so in otherwords $#^@! So any know how to fix/(Get around ) this?

Ok well I may have to try Slack.
I just tried installing Drake8.2 and more or less same problem. It won't work with the second cd. How annoying. Oh well, suppose I should be tryign slack and/or debian sometime.

Well the plot thinkens, um yeah.
Anyway I swiped my friends DVD-rom and switched it with mine, but I still get the problem. So now I've tried switching around the the ide positions. I tried installing drake and slack. Drake had the same problem I believe, but slack just installed and woul boot again. So I don't know. blah

Your saying Slack "DID" install and reboot fine?

No sorry, I guess I wasn't paying attention to what I typed.
Slack installed fine and said to reboot. So I did and it said error loading operationg system. I'm just kind of lost where to go from here.
Sounds like the bootloader is a bit confused. Which bootloader (lilo or Grub) are you using, and where did you install that bootloader?
