hi i have downloaded the first cd for mandrake cause people said thats all u need for the basic install. my question is what do i do with the file i know it is a iso file.. do i just burn it to cd???

Yeah, you'll have to burn it to cd with a utility that supports ISO burning. Most of the newer CD burning tools support this, as does a Windows XP powertoy. (Eeeww...) :p Also, make sure to write down as much of your system information as you can before starting the install. There's not a whole lot worse than getting 2/3 of the way through the install if you don't know your hardware information to set up things like X or networking. After you've got as much information as you can, just boot the machine with the CD-ROM, and installation starts from there!

http://www.linuxiso.org/viewdoc.php/howtoburn.html will explain how to burn a iso image to cd using most of the popular cd burning apps available.

Just make sure you don't burn the iso image as is to the cd as it needs to be created as a filesystem and not a single iso file on the cd.
