Hi everyone.
I am very new to Linux. I guess total disapointment with XP sends me the Linux way.

I tried to install Red Hat 7.3 on a Compaq Presario 633mhz proc with 512 megs of RAM
For some reason, I can not get to either KDE or GNOME desktops.
I was getting error messages which kept dumping me into shell. I tried reinstalling, and now I get a black screen. I tried using the rescue boot, and could not find the Xconfigurator at all. I found the system after long minutes of black screen coming up with a line saying x was respawning too fast, holding for 5 minutes or something like that.

I also can not boot out of a floppy: it tells me I have the wrong disk (although I just made a boot diskette during installation.)

Please help me get the mess straight. I can not get to the main screen.

thanks, and I would really appreciate any help divorcing myself from Bill Gates and gang.

Respawning too fast usually means X is not configured correctly.

What video card are you using and is it supported by the version of X that Redhat 7.3 uses.

X -version (tells you the X version)

www.xfree86.org to lookup your video card.

Thank you so much for the reply. As to video card, it is the onboard Intel 810e series card. If I have the wrong card configured, how do I change that?
I am using it with a Samsung SyncMaster 753DF monitor.

thanks again. I really appreciate that

Mak :)
