Alright I am completly new to linux and I am trying to install Debian (which I hear isn't the easiest to install) anyway I ran the whole setup and everything installed everything and X but whe I type startx it gives me this:
X: exec of /usr/bin/X11/XF86_None failed
_X11 TransSocketUNIXconnect: cant connect: errno = 111
giving up.
xinit: connection refused (errno 111): unable to connect to X server
xinit: No such process (errno 3): server error.
Can anyone recognize this and offer anything that could help i am really new.

I've never used Debian myself and of course am not familiar with the installation.
Are you sure you have installed ALL the necessary X related packages?
Any of those proud Debian users that can help out here?

would another version possibly be a better choice for a newbie like myself it is no problem for me to download a new full ISO
Every distro as some command-line utility that you can use to configure and fix your X setup; see if one of the following (unabashedly stolen from fancypiper's sig) works:
Debian - dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86
XF86Setup
XFree86 -configure
Xconfigurator
xf86cfg
xf86config
xconf
It might help if you posted your /etc/X11/XF86Config file and told us what make/model of video card you have.

hey, wow... my very first post. i've been lurking around the boards for a week or so, gleaning some invaluable bits of information, and this is finally my first chance to participate...
I, too, am a mostly-complete newbie who decided to try and install debian. I, too, have an NVidia GeForce Ti-4400, and I, too, went through hell and back trying to get it to work. Here's what's up...
X: exec of /usr/bin/X11/XF86_None failed
_X11 TransSocketUNIXconnect: cant connect: errno = 111
giving up.
xinit: connection refused (errno 111): unable to connect to X server
xinit: No such process (errno 3): server error.
In all the error messages I got, that's actually a new set for me... I've gotten complaints about modversions.h, 'No screens found', 'Your dist hates you and is out to ruin your life', and all that, but I never did try to run X without the drivers installed. However, if you're trying to start up X right after installing, there's a bit of work to be done...
First off, you're going to need the kernel-source.2.x.x package, along with the equivalent kernel-headers.2.x.x, both unpacked and installed. You can get the source off of your install disk using dselect, but I had to download the headers from ftp.debian.org.
After installing those, (oh, put them in /usr/src) you're then going to need the NVidia drivers... Head to www.nvidia.com to get those, and also print off the readme on how to install them. It's a fairly straightforward process.
Finally, after installing the drivers and editing your XFree86Config file (the readme explains how), you can start up X successfully...
Best of luck!

Well it probably also has something to do with an older install of Debian it's potato 2.2.2 (got it last year from someone) Would I need to upgrade it and if so how
Also Perhaps you could actually give me the exact directory the files are and how to unpack them (as i said I am a newbie I am just tired of Winblows)

Debian 3.0 comes with open source nvidia drivers. They work well except for gaming. If you want to game you can still install the official nvidia drivers, which have OpenGL hardware support, but they are harder to install.
It would be best if you at least upgraded to Xfree86 4.x, because 3.x doesn't come with nvidia drivers and also isn't compatible with the nvidia ones.
Upgrading your whole distro wouldn't hurt, either.
Don't ask me how to upgrade, as I have never done this. But as far as I've heard, it's quite easy if you have an internet connection that works with Linux.

Alright I said poo on Debian and used Mandrake (yes i have no life and a good downstream so i can download these things) so now i just need to know which drivers to install and whatnot I mean for video i am currently using the default video controller and it refreshes slow and hurts my eyes (duh it's like 50 fps)
How do i unzip tar or gz files is there a program in linux that does it or is there a download for that sort of thing oh and when you install where do programs go?
