I downloaded the slackware packages for XFree86 4.0.1 from linuxmafia.org and used pkgtool to install them. As far as I know they installed correctly but when I restarted and ran startx it gave an error but it reported the X version as 4.0.1 I thought I just had to configure it so I ran dexter but it said bad command or file name but XF86Setup ran and gave an error. Am I using the right config command? Has anyone successfully installed XF86 4.0.1 in Slack7.1? Did you have these problems?
Thanks

Did you...
1)"uninstall" the original X3.3.6 packages beforehand?
2) Run xf86config or XF86Setup again to re-configure X and create a new /etc/XF86Config file?
3) Read the (somewhat confusing) documentation on X4.0.x and make sure your card is supported as well as understanding the differences between the current X and previous (3.3.x) versions?

No I didn't I was told it would do it for me, but anyway xf86config did it and I now have a working XFree86 4.0.1!
