Greet!

I have now loaded Red Hat Linux 7.2 onto my laptop and desktop several times as I continue to strive for that 'ideal' configuration. The options presented to me during the installations were

Gnome
KDE
Development tools
Games

The only one I chose to install was the development tools as this is my principal interest. Once I have achieved my basic aims (Java, modem, network -- not necessarily in that order), I shall play with the rest. I also chose a graphical logon! So I get a logon screen that has the XFree86 logo, and, once I've logged on, I get to a minimalist desktop, which, on the whole, I think is pretty nifty (and speedier than Gnome and KDE which I have loaded in previous incarnations).

But what is it? (/root/.wm_style contains a single line: Fvwm95) Am I the only person who runs things this way? Can it be configured (backgroung colours, time formats on the command prompt, etc.) or is that why Gnome et al are there? More particularly, the resolution on my laptop is 1024 * 768, but the logon screen looks distinctly 800 * 600; is there anything I can do about that?

Aah yes! Each step forward raises more questions than answers. Can anyone point me in the direction of some literature that may contain answers? (I have worked through some of the more basic NHFs and searched the forums for some of the above questions.)

Thanks and regards
Jay

XF86 is like the foundation of x. You add on top of that, a Window manager and finally, if you wish, a desktop environment. I'm not sure what the default wm for Redhat is. Gentoo uses twm as it's default if no other is installed.

You can use the setup utility to configure your display resolution.
