Hi All
I'm trying like crazy to get my WinXP machine to recognize my linux box.
I have my old win98 machine working fine with the linux box, but the XP is biting me in the butt....
Is there a minimum version of Samba that I need on the Linux machine? I'm running Samba 2.0.6-9
Also, if I need to upgrade, how do I do it? I can't afford to mess up the existing rig cuz it's all I got.
Thanks for any help. :)

I don't remember exatly which version, but you should be able to fin it either at samba.org or google. However YES there is a limit when using samba and XP. I think it is only the last rev of samba that fixed this problem. I know I have the latest version and no problems speaking to 2 win2ks, 1 win2k server, and 1 XPpro.
Also, somebody turned me on to a really cool app, LiniNeighborhood (find the RPM - its easier). Basically it speaks to Windows Shares from a Linux host - very helpful for me, my linux box is a secondary server and my main machine is win2k. I am contantly transfering files back and forth, depending on which machine I am stiing at when I want to download something

Thank you all.
I'm stuck having to use WinXP (home edition). My 98 box has problems that I can't seem to fix.
As mentioned, I have an older version of Samba on the Linux box.
Must I also have Samba on the XP box?
Thanks very much. :)

NO, you do not need Samba on your WinXP machine, I don't think there is any such thing any how. What Samba server does is, it anuounces itself in a Windows Network as an NTY machine. Samba converts the Unix shares to windows format and accepts the windows users (provided their have accounts on the Linux machine w/ appropriate passwords). The reason why you need the latest version of Samba has to do with the way Microsoft changed the authentication encryptions with XP (or so it was explained to me).

I use Samba on my Linux box and it talks to my XP Home machine fine. The only catch is that you have to set up Samba as a workgroup, and not a domain. MS hobbled XP Home so it cannot join domains, but if you have less than five connected computers, a workgroup should suit you fine.
For the latest version of samba go to
http://www.samba.org
or

Thank you all, once again. This sounds like we're making headway.
What are Unix and Windows "shares" ?
How do I upgrade an older version of Samba? (I've been looking around the Samba site but haven't found how to do it so far)
Many thanks. :)
"shares" are those volumes or directories that you have declared as shareable on each of your machines. Obviously, "Windows shares" are shared directories on a Windows maxhine, and "Unix shares" refer to those on a UNIX/Linux machine.
As for upgrading, the easiest way to do it is probably through whatever package management program your distro uses (rpm, apt-get, etc.).

You need SAMBA-2.2.2 or newer.

This is an excellent primer, steps through why, what you need, and install
I suggest you read the whole thing.

To get the Win XP box to recognise your samba shares, you could try installing Win 98 on that machine and then set the shares and then upgrade to XP. That's what I did and it worked, but I guess you'd need the right version of Samba first. It is a pain in the butt to reinstall an OS but it might be a good last resort. Any version of Windows seems to be inconsistent when it's connecting to the network. At least that has been my experience.

I'd re-install 98 on the old win box in a minute (and I've done it a million times on other machines), but it's an HP and it uses some proprietary install disc that wipes out the entire hard drive first. You can't just install over top the existing stuff and keep your data and progs. It's a completely new install....
The weird problem with the 98 machine is that when using Internet Explorer (5+), when you try to enter data into some textboxes, the darn browser closes. It doesn't happen all the time. Just a few times a day. It's unpredictable as far as I can tell.
I've run the "fixit" routine in IE, and I've upgraded both the browser and Windows a number of times (plus I've run Norton Utils I don't know how many times), but nothing works.
I think it has something to do with the part of Windows that controls the keyboard. It seems related to keystrokes. If I could re-install just the keyboard code to see if that would fix it, I think that would be worth it, but I can't seem to isolate just that code to re-install.
Anyway....I really appreciate everyone's help. I'll keep trying...
Thanks very much :) :)
