so i have a sound blaster 16 PCI card installed in one of my slots, but linux yells at me that it is an Ensoniq5880, so i did a sndconfig, got to the manuel card configuation, and i get this error when i tell it to use the sound blaster 16 driver

/lib/modules/2.4.18-5/kernel/drivers/sound/sb.o: init_modules: no such device
/lib/modules/2.4.18-5/kernel/drivers/sound/sb.o: insmod
/lib/modules/2.4.18-5/kernel/drivers/sound/sb.o: failed
/lib/modules/2.4.18-5/kernel/drivers/sound/sb.o: insmod sound-slot-0 failed

all i have to say is HELP!!! (by the way, it USED to work)

First try disabling PnP OS in the bios and see if that helps.

It used to work with the same pc and distro?

yes it did used to work, then i wanted to play games and winex wasnt cutting it (dont get me wrong, its a great program) so i decided to insall W2K, well long story short before we were done we had to reinstall linux once, and windows twice, but anyway, after that it just seemed to stop working, i am still having to wonder why it comes up as an Ensoniq when it is a Sound Blaster...? oh and i will try the PnP thing and let ya kn when i can

The Ensoniq5880 is probably the sound chip it uses.

Howdy.

mdwatts is right (as always...)! Creative used the Ensoniq chips on many of their products, however, the 5880 chip pops up in a Google search as the SB 128 PCI, and NOT the SB16. Are you sure you've got the right card identified? My suggestion would be to pop the card out of the machine (or get a mirror and flashlight) and read the model number off the card (should be something like "CT-4890"). Go to "http://www.soundblaster.com", hit "Americas" for region, then support, then punch in your model # into the lower search box. The spec screen should pop up shortly afterwards. Use this chip ID to set your config.

Hope this helps...

SB card fried? My old SB Pro 8 bit card still works! Sounds terrible compaired to newer cards, but it still works the same as when I bought it about 10 years ago, lol

well the 512 has every appearance of working, and we have a decent set of speakers to go along with it now :), thanx for all the suggestions
