Well I decide to get into Linux for fun. I have been reading all of the NHF's (and others) about installing and none seem to adress my situation. I have 2 harddrives. Both are IDE, one is 7gb, the other 6gb. I have 2 partitions on the first, one for Windows system and such, the other for games and big files. I just recently acquired the second drive. I was thinking that I could install Linux on the second drive, which would isolate it from Windows. I however, have not been able to find out where I should put the dual boot prgram, or how to get it to point to the Linux install on the second disk.

If I put the one from Mandrake (Grub?) on the first disk, will it automatically know where Linux is?

Thanks for the help.

If you put grub on the MBR (Master Boot Record) of your first HD alongside of windows, yes grub will boot Linux (Mandrake) from the second HD as it will also boot windows from the first HD, just now that if you re-install windows on the first HD, grub will be lost, so make a bootdisk during the install, so you can boot into Linux in that occassion to run grub again to re-enable the bootmanager grub.

The Mandrake install is very easy. Be sure not to choose the automatic option at the beginning. Mandrake will locate both hard drives so you will be able to choose the one you want for Mandrake. It also gives you the option to install GRUB, and you should do so on your existing MBR. You are even allowed the option of choosing which will be the defaut Operating System if the machine is booted up and left to do so on its own. Good luck to you! Elinor
